Close, disputed decisions have always been of the fight game. There's no way around them and really no way to fix the system. Tight decisions often produce passion on both sides and that's just fine with me, as long as we get to see the fighters to duke it out again sometime in the future.
A draw was all Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard could walk away with, after battling tooth and nail for 25 minutes last night at UFC 125. "Kissing your sister" always elicits a strong response from fight observers. This Cagewriter scored the fight for Maynard (47-46), but a draw was understandable.
MMA writer Gareth A. Davies and Las Vegas Review-Journal Ed Graney weren't quite as open to a tie fight.
After being bombarded on Twitter for the use of the word "robbery," Davies said the term may have been too harsh and backed off. Graney did no such thing.
It was the UFC's turn at offering a major head-scratcher on Saturday night, when Gray Maynard should have departed the octagon at the MGM Grand Garden wearing a shiny new belt instead of a disgusted look.
That the main event at UFC 125 between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and Maynard was scored in a way to produce a draw was just a tad more laughable than the thought of Floyd Mayweather Jr. going finger-to-finger with Paul Blart the Mall Cop.
Edgar got crushed in the first round, losing 10-8 on all three scorecards. He was in a hole. Graney suggested there was no way Edgar climbed out of it by winning the final four rounds.
But to say Edgar then won Rounds 2 through 5 -- which is how judge Marcos Rosales foolishly scored the fight -- is to say Mayweather has been basking in good press of late. [...] Adam Hill, the mixed martial arts beat writer for the Review-Journal, also had it 48-46 for the Las Vegas challenger. Adam knows his stuff. He's no Marcos Rosales.
Graney's take was strong and he even found a way to squeeze in two JWoww mentions. Jenni Farley, the breasty "Jersey Shore" bimbo, was seated cageside backing Edgar, the New Jersey-native.
There rest of Graney's column focused on the fact that at least MMA fans get to see the fights they yearn for, unlike boxing. Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather may never happen while we've been waiting for Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez III since March of 2008.
Shortly after the draw was announced, Dana White decided that Anthony Pettis would have to wait for his shot at the winner until a real winner emerges. Early this morning, he confirmed his attentions to make Edgar-Maynard III as soon as possible.

Trying to keep up a healthy post-rehab routine, Lindsay Lohan stepped out for a workout session in West Hollywood on Tuesday (January 4).
The "Georgia Rule" actress appeared in high spirits as she arrived at the gym for a training session to help relieve the stresses of her current legal woes - as Miss Lohan has been in headlines all day stemming from her incident with a chemical technician at the Betty Ford Center on December 12.
Earlier in the morning, the Palm Desert police department said that they've decided to pass battery charges on to prosecutors while also readying to notify Lohan's probation officer of the violation,
Complaining about the department spokesperson having made the public announcement, LiLo's lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley said, "The important, yet limited, investigatory role of the police to gather facts and collect evidence is well-established."
She continued, "The fact that the Palm Desert Police Department went outside this limited role to issue a press statement expressing its opinion about what should happen in Ms. Lohan's case is highly unusual and deeply troubling."

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.
By Akshay Bhansali

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.
Between Katy Perry's "Firework," Ke$ha's "We R Who We R," Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It," Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and "OMG" and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year's biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn't heard "Dynamite" or "In My Head"?
The love went both ways, with dance music's biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year's VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.
So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.
"You definitely saw tempos go up this year," Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. "And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now."
"I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower," said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. "I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment."
Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: "I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there."
Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.
"I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it," said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. "He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile 'unst-unst.' But it's just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent."
"You have someone like will.i.am, who's like, 'Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,' and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music," Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. "R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year."
Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: "It's actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that's gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z's thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience."
"I think it's caught on this year because the people who've done it have been successful," offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. "Like 'OMG,' with usher, he didn't have success until he made a dance record. He had 'There Goes My Baby' and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn't really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, 'OK, let me just try this out.' It's like Auto-Tune. Like, 'Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.' They end up liking it and doing more of it."
So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.
"I do think it's a blip," Caramanica said. "I don't think that's gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we'll all look back on and go, 'Wasn't that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?"
"At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, 'Let me go back to my soul background,' " Hope said. "When you actually have to say something, dance doesn't really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it's kind of a fad."
"I think music is very cyclical," Eng offered. "So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I'm sure it will phase out at some point."
Wilson called dance music "the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer."
What do you think? Is dance music here to stay? Let us know in the comments!

'It was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson,' Cassidy says at album-release party Monday night.

NEW YORK — Many a Michael Jackson fan lined up outside of the Roseland Ballroom on Monday night to celebrate the release of the King of Pop's posthumous Michael album. Dozens of dancers and fans filled the ballroom's floor, decked out in costumes inspired by MJ's iconic looks from throughout his esteem career. One of those fans also happened to be the evening's master of ceremonies, DJ Cassidy.
"I'm here to make the fans dance," he told MTV News. "I think that's why Michael essentially made the music. He wanted to make people dance. He wanted to make people feel the emotion he felt, and I'm here to do just that. I'm here to help the fans in the celebration of the king."
Dressed in a leather suit with a pink shirt and socks, a red bowtie and shell-top Adidas, Cassidy said that he's been a fan of Jackson for as long as he can remember. The late singer has been his inspiration in anything artistic in his life, from music to fashion.
"So much of my fashion comes from Michael," Cassidy explained. "So much of how I play music comes from how he formed his songs, how he created his sound that really inspired the way that I DJ. And really, it inspired me to want to be a DJ, to want to make people dance.
"So, when I became a DJ at the age of 10, it was always my dream to DJ for Michael Jackson," he added. "Tonight's just a small way for me to really celebrate his music."
The party's guests also included producers Teddy Riley, Eddie Cascio and Neff U, who each had a hand in producing Michael's tracks. But before he began to spin for the night, Cassidy was thinking back to the classics, particularly his favorite party song, 1979's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."
"You can be anywhere in the world, any city, any small town, any type of crowd, black, white, old, young, poor, rich, at any type of venue," he said. "They could be wanting to hear house music, hip-hop music, anything in between, but 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' will turn that party out."
What's your favorite Michael Jackson song? Share it in the comments.

Alistair Overeem is making this fight stuff look too easy. Just two weeks after muscling his way to a K-1 kickboxing title in Japan, he ran roughshod over former UFC super prospect Todd Duffee. Overeem walked straight ahead against the powerful puncher. He delivered a vicious knee to the body, a right to the side of the head and a left hook. That was it. Duffee collapsed into the ropes and Overeem spared him what could've been some nasty punishment. All that in just 19 seconds at Dynamite!! 2010 in Saitama, Japan.
Frankly, Duffee was in over his head. The 25-year-old is a solid prospect but he only had seven pro MMA fights under his belt. This was fight No. 46 for Overeem. The size difference was also alarming. Duffee is massive at 6-foot-3, 249 pounds, but Overeem looked like a giant and fought like one.

If the fight stinks, at least the postfight posedown will thrill the fans at Dynamite!! 2010. Japanese promoters have delivered an opponent for Alistair Overeem on their year-end MMA card, it's fellow muscleman Todd Duffee. What a holiday gift to close out the year.
Duffee has been in limbo since his mysterious axing from the UFC back in September. The 6-foot-3, 252-pounder was considered one of the UFC's best heavyweight prospects. After putting a first-round beatdown on Mike Russow, Duffee gassed and was shocked via knockout in the third. Four months later, he was cut by the UFC with a 1-1 record.
FanHouse confirmed Thursday morning that the 25-year-old will face Overeem on Jan. 31 in Saitama, Japan (HDNet).
HeadKickLegend reports that Duffee will be paid $60,000 to show and an additional bonus if he pulls the upset. HKL also says Bobby Lashley turned down an Overeem fight over financial concerns.
Overeem, the Strikeforce heavyweight champ, is riding an eight-fight win streak that dates to 2007. His last MMA fight was a walkover in May against Brett Rogers in St. Louis.
On New Year's Eve, he'll be just 20 days removed from fighting three times in one night at the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010.
This is MMA fight No. 45 for Overeem and only Duffee's eighth. Is it too soon?
The youngster has everything to gain. Hopefully, he's corrected some of his gas-tank issues because Overeem can go hard for 15 minutes and has huge knockout power.
Duffee will also have to deal with a long trip to Japan. Let's hope he has only good things to say about DREAM's promoters on the way to the fight.

What says "Happy Holidays" more than scowling fighters? Nothing! The fine folks at Playboy did a photo shoot with UFC stars Ryan Bader, Junior dos Santos, Dana White, Vitor Belfort, Stephan Bonnar and Jon Jones. You can catch it in the January issue, which has Pam Anderson on the cover, and apparently, a nude pictorial of a Russian spy. (With the possibility of a treaty between the U.S. and Russia, she's just planning for unemployment.) You should also check out the updated Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings, and read on for some MMA poetry.
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the Octagon with care,
In hopes that St. Dana White soon would be there;
The fighters were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of bonuses danced in their heads;
When out on the Strip there arose such a sound,
Someone asked "Who is the best pound-for-pound!?"
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Thinking Silva or GSP -- they're straight cash.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature fighter, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, how could he go?
I knew in a moment it must be Jose Aldo.
More rapid than eagles his opponents they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Manny! now, Faber! now, Brown and Brookins!
On, Mickle! on Shoji! on, Nogueira and Swanson!
To the floor of the cage! to the canvas on the ring!
To knock you all out ain't no big thing!"
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Aldo came with a bound.
A bundle of belts he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His fists so strong, his kicks rather scary!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
Training to fight without a single quirk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
Merry Christmas to all! And to all a good night!

Roy Nelson is on the shelf for a while or is he? Inside MMA needed to bring Roger Cossack on board to navigate this story. Nelson is being sued by Square Ring Inc. for a contract signed before his fight against Jeff Monson in March of 2009. Nelson then accepted a slot on Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter." That's where things get fuzzy.
Apparently, SRI believes it holds promotional rights for Nelson and the fighter violated the deal by working out a deal with Zuffa. But there's a lot more to the story that the casual viewer should know.
The IMMA interview is incredibly misleading in several ways. Roy Jones is made into the villain. That's really not the case. Square Ring Inc. is a legitimate promoter in the world of boxing, so it's not Jones simply trying to screw over the MMA fighter.
Secondly, Nelson was working in a matchmaking capacity for the promotion after his March of 2009 fight. According to the Fight Lawyer blog, Square Ring built its lawsuit around a short conversation between the UFC's Marc Ratner and Nelson at a May 2009 MMA event in Primm, Nev.
On or about May 24, 2009, Defendant's Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs, Mr. Marc Ratner, attended the Primm Event. Plaintiff s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. John Wirt, spoke with Mr. Ratner at the Primm Event and told Mr. Ratner that Mr. Nelson was not only assisting SRI's matchmaker for the MMA bouts on the Primm Event, but also that Mr. Nelson was under contract with SRI as a fighter. Mr. Ratner also spoke separately with Mr. Nelson while at the Primm Event.
In the end, it sounds like the lawyers have to figure out some cash settlement Nelson will have to send the way of Square Ring.
Check out the interview and then read the take from the Fight Lawyer. SRI probably has a case and Nelson is far from a fighter getting bullied by Jones. Hopefully, the financial terms can be worked out quickly so Nelson can get back into the Octagon sooner rather than later. Because of his fighting style, appearance and ability to promote a fight, just about every high level UFC heavyweight is calling out the mulleted-mammoth. Nelson's tale should serve as a lesson to all MMA fighters outside the UFC. Get a lawyer before you sign any contract!

Back in May, there was lots of head shaking and confusion surrounding Nate Diaz's move out of the lightweight division up to 170 pounds. So far, the jump has worked. Diaz dominated his first two opponents at welterweight, Rory Markham and Marcus Davis.
In this RawVegas.tv video, Larry Pepe, of ProMMARadio.com, thinks Diaz has bitten off more than he can chew in Dong Hyun Kim, a big 170-pounder.
Along with Damon Martin from MMAWeekly.com, we also discuss concerns about Chris Leben's motivation to fight Brian Stann, and what might be a lack of focus during his extended layoff since fighting twice this summer.

Satoshi Ishii took another step in his progression as a mixed martial artist by downing legendary kickboxer Jerome LeBanner. The 38-year-old K-1 veteran had a tough time staying off his back. Ishii took him down whenever and wherever.
The Japanese judo champion's best round was the third when he threatened with several kimura attempts. He rolled to a unanimous decision against a guy fighting MMA for the first time since 2006.
Ishii (pictured on the right) was giving away 31 pounds and used a lot of energy in controlling the Frenchman on the floor. There's still questions about his stamina. At only 233 pounds, he's also caught in no man's land between light heavyweight and the massive heavyweights. The 24-year-old is now 4-1 in MMA.
While Ishii may be the future of Japanese MMA, Kazushi Sakaraba is clearly the past. The 41-year-old lost again and walked away from the ring looking like an accident victim. He didn't suffer much damage in his loss against Marius Zaromskis but one of his cauliflower ears got popped early in the fight, making it impossible to continue.
Just 90 seconds into the fight, Sakuraba (26-14-1) was bleeding like a stuff pig. The doctors checked it once then Zaromskis landed another good shot on that right ear. Sakuraba clearly felt the pain and grabbed the ear. HDNet color voice Frank Trigg said "his ear fell off the side of his head."
The doctor stopped the fight and Sakuraba left the ring with his head in a towel wrapped by loads of tape. The man who once fought a 90-minute battle against Royce Gracie, has now lost three straight and five-of-seven.
Loris Kessel Hubert Hahne Jeffrey Michael Gordon Danny Kladis Noboru Asahi
Japanese MMA needed this one. The nation many considered the equal to Brazil and the U.S. at one time, has fallen on hard times. The stars of Japan - Norifumi Yamamoto, Hayato Sakurai, Shinya Aoki, Kazushi Sakuraba and Takanori Gomi - got old, lazy or exposed over the last few years. Tatsuya Kawajiri gained back a small measure of that lost respect by taking out former Strikeforce lightweight champ Josh Thomson. He did it pretty easily via unanimous decision at Dynamite!! 2010 in Saitama, Japan.
Sure he was representing his country, but Kawajiri (27-6-2) individually needed the win badly as well.
He was coming off an odd performance against Aoki back in July, where the submission ace took him apart on the ground. Kawajiri refused to tap to a heel hook and was badly injured. That was the same Aoki, who looked terrible just a few months earlier against current Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez. Yes, the same Melendez who split two wars against Thomson.
It should've been an easy win for Thomson this morning, right? That's not the way it works in MMA. Styles makes fights and Kawajiri's strong wrestling made it difficult for Thomson to get his standup and dynamic kicking game going.
Kawajiri didn't do anything fancy to get Thomson (18-4) to the ground. In fact, his powerful work out of the clinch was very American-like. Once on the ground, Thomson never threatened a submission and had to constantly work to keep Kawajiri from improving his position. The Japanese star scored the mount in each round and threatened with an arm-triangle submission in the first and third rounds.
This may serve as a wake-up call for Thomson, who recently suggested that he was getting a little bored with the sport and there was a lack of challenges at lightweight.

Opting to ring in the new year in sunny Florida, Maria Menounos was spotted flaunting her fit and fine beach body in Miami on Friday afternoon (December 31).
Clad in an oh-so-hot black bikini, the TV personality romped around the sandy shoreline while partaking in a game of football with "No Ordinary Family" actor Michael Chiklis.
Tweeting about the active outing, Miss Menounos wrote, "Beach football today w/@MichaelChiklis...paparazzi had some fun! Hope the bikini shots are flattering!"
Getting more than she hoped for, the brunette beauty ended up offering up a few swimsuit malfunction shots before closing out her beach football festivities and heading back to the hotel to ready for the NYE 2011 parties.

Opting to ring in 2011 in the States, Emma Watson was spotted arriving at LAX International Airport in Los Angeles, California on Friday (December 31).
The lovely actress was fresh off of an overseas flight from London's Heathrow Airport, as she looked cute in a navy jacket and black trousers while toting a Globetrotter safari handbag through the terminal.
The trip to the U.S. comes after Miss Watson celebrated Christmas with her family in the UK, while also having to tend to Harry Potter re-shoot efforts.
She tweeted of the efforts, "Hi guys, are you all ready for Christmas? Not long to go now... Exams all done and I?m back in the UK in 6 inches of snow. Currently at Leavesden filming reshoots with Dan and Rupert. Feels strange to be back! x"
