MTV News goes straight to the source to discuss recent pop-culture mermaid trends and beefs.

Beyoncé declared her love for mermaids during her MTV special "The Year of 4," while Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler have all dressed up like the mythical sea creatures onstage or in videos. Madonna has surrounded herself with mermen during a past tour, and mermaids also show up in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and in several new novels, including a forthcoming book by "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer.
Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida is famous for its mermaid shows, so MTV News decided to go right to the source and get a real-deal mermaid on the phone. It's no surprise that "mermaid" Carli Goodworth told us it's officially the Year of the Mermaid.
"It used to be really popular, like, 60 years ago and everybody was all about mermaids, and now today, it's coming back again," Goodworth told MTV News. "The stars are starting to use it, and the people from outside are loving it, and hopefully it'll draw more people to our attraction as well."
So why are pop stars taking on mermaid alter egos? Goodworth said the public persona of mermaids has shifted from the cute and cuddly Disney version to the more accurate version of mermaids who are mysterious, dangerous and sexy.
And the mermaid trend hasn't been free from controversy: There has already been beef between fans of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, accusing the pop stars of lifting the idea, and then between Lady Gaga and Bette Midler, who did the mermaid-in-a-wheelchair routine decades before Gaga did.
"It's becoming so popular," Goodworth laughed about the mermaid beefs. "I think it's awesome. We're used to the few people around here, because we are known as the mermaid country, and it's neat to see all these other people battling it out to be the only mermaid. It's just different."
Being that Goodworth has performed as a mermaid for quite some time now, she's happy to see other people getting excited about it. "We love mermaids, so it's fun to see other people doing stuff with mermaids besides us," she said, adding her advice: "Be creative, do your own thing, really do your research."

Ovince St. Preux had no intentions of going from the gridiron to the cage, but trainer Eric Turner tricked him into fighting mixed martial arts. Turner saw the potential in the former Tennessee Volunteers' linebacker and convinced him that the punches in the cage weren't that hard.
Four years later OSP is the one dishing out the pain. Joe Cason felt his power tonight in Las Vegas when he ate a knee to the face and a shin to the ribs. Cason was shot. Seconds later, the fight hit the deck where St. Preux eventually got off five huge shots, splattering Cason's blood on the canvas, and the downed fighter tapped due to strikes at 1:12 of the first round at Strikeforce Challengers 17.
The Haitian-American, who was a high school football star in Immokalee, Fla. prior to his time at Tennessee, has won eight straight and is 5-0 with Strikeforce. OSP thinks it's time for step up in competition and a promotion to Strikeforce's bigger shows.
"I think the fans have been talking about it. I think the fans want it. I'll be calling out lots of people ... Gegard [Mousasi], [Renato] 'Babalu' [Sobral]. I'm definitely ready to step up," said St. Preux, 28.
OSP (11-4) still works out of Knoxville, Tenn. the home of the University of Tennessee, but with some time off after his last fight in January, he made sure to travel around the country to train with new camps.
Most of his learning in 2010 came in the cage as he fought six times. With some time away from active fights, he worked with Dan Henderson's camp in Temecula, Ca. and also made his way to Denver to train at Grudge Training Center, the home of fighters like Brendan Schaub, Nate Marquardt and Shane Carwin.
Cason comes from a good camp as well, with Duke Roufus in Milwaukee, and it was clear the formerly unbeaten light heavyweight had a swagger about him and came to fight. But his aggression actually cost him as OSP used good footwork to avoid big shots and get off some counterstrikes.
The strike that destroyed Cason was unique. Cason charged St. Preux and the rangier ex-football star attempted a body kick. The leg never fully uncoiled, but with Cason coming forward he got drilled under his chin by OSP's knee and his shin crushed his ribs. The double-dose of pain wobbled Cason and he never recovered.
St. Preux has told the "tricked into fighting" story many times including again this week when he appeared on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas.
"My biggest thing was about getting hit," said St. Preux, who played football at 6-foot-3, 248 pounds. "[Turner] had some 18-ounce boxing gloves on; he kind of hit me in the arm. He said, 'This is the hardest you're going to get hit.'"
When St. Preux fought for the first time and got blasted by an opponent who was wearing MMA's official five-ounce gloves, OSP realized he'd been duped. St. Preux knew he was in a fight, but he didn't freak out. His athleticism showed when he first started in the game and it's really paying off now. Cason was too slow to avoid the inevitable beating tonight in Sin City.

Bellator has done a heckuva collecting some top-notch featherweight fighters. While the UFC is struggling to find some depth beyond Jose Aldo, Bellator has an open race between 5-7 fighters for top spot in its 145-pound division.
Tonight on MTV2 (9 p.m. ET/PT) we get some more answers as Pat Curran faces Ronnie Mann and Marlon Sandro battles Nazareno Malegarie in Bellator Season 5 Featherweight tournament in Rama, Canada.. The winner of the tournament will eventually get a shot at Bellator champ Joe Warren.
Sandro, riding a streak of 4-of-5 win in Japan, was the pre-tournament favorite. Sandro (18-2) got fans in a lather with his performances at Sengoku 11, 12 and 13 where he scored three straight knockouts in a combined three minutes and 20 seconds. But Curran's success at lightweight (wins over Toby Imada and Roger Huerta, plus a close loss to Eddie Alvarez) and a dominant win in the first round over Luis Palomino might make him the favorite. Before we get to see a Sandro-Curran final, they have to get by some tough hombres in Canada.
Sandro is a big favorite at minus-260 over the once-beaten Malegarie while Curran is a slight choice over Mann at minus-130.

In describing his miraculous turnaround from the brink of retirement, Tito Ortiz is beginning to throw around the term "Cinderella story."� Ortiz, who fighting for his career at UFC 132, is now fighting Rashad Evans at UFC 133, but not everyone is feeling all warm and fuzzy. Showtime MMA analyst and former UFC fighter Pat Miletich was asked about Tito's tale and came across as less than thrilled that Ortiz is being given such a great opportunity (4:00 mark).
"I'm not comment a whole lot on that except, 'throw me in on an undercard and if I win, suddenly I'm a main event guy?' I don't know how that works. Tito puts asses in seats and probably sells pay-per-views, so it's a business decision most likely." Miletich said.
The Showtime analyst was also asked about a possible dream fight against Fedor Emelianenko.
"Let's be honest, Tito in the ring with Fedor ... I don't think Tito deserves that. I gotta be honest with you," Miletich said. "The level of class in those two persons. I don't think Tito remotely deserves that."
Miletich appeared on ESPNRadio1100 to promote his hour of the "The Sixth Annual ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM 24-hour Radiothon" to benefit "The Caring Place" in Las Vegas.
Pat will be joined by Mauro Ranallo on Jul. 22 at the Palms. Anyone who'll be in the Las Vegas area that weekend can bid to sit in for an hour of radio with the Showtime duo. The proceeds go to "The Caring Place."

Zak Jensen and Neil Grove opened Bellator 47 with a bang. The heavyweights, who both reside just under the 265 pound limit, collided from the opening seconds like brahma bulls. Grove was rocked just five seconds in, but recovered to gain top control and smash out Jensen in exactly minutes in Rama, Canada.
Grove (11-3-1) showed he's tough. From the opening bell, the bulky big guys threw like wild men and Jensen clipped Grove with a right hand that dropped him. In the past, the South African fighting out of England with no formal wrestling training when he entered the sport, may have panicked and bailed mentally. With better training under his belt, Grove grabbed a leg and eventually flipped to work for a kneebar or heel hook.
Then both fighters sat up on the rear ends and wailed away at each other. Jensen couldn't keep pace and dropped back where Grove jumped into his guard. The 6-foot-6, 264 pounder got off six hammerfists and referee Yves Lavigne jumped in to save the American.
"He hit me with a couple of hard shots. I'm happy that I took them and because I've been spending so much time in America training some wrestling, I've been learning what to do when I'm on the ground. I made use of it," Grove told Bellator's Jimmy Smith. "When I was on the ground I just knew I had to let my hands go. The man can take a punch!"
Grove, 40, has been working on his grappling and ground work. It's always been the big hole is his game. It was exploited during Bellator's Season 3 Heavyweight tournament by former Div. 1 NCAA wrestling champion Cole Konrad. Konrad scored an early takedown and eventually got a first round win via keylock at Bellator 32 back in October.
"My loss against Cole Konrad is something of the past. I've been training everyday since that fight to get back into the heavyweight tournament," Grove said as he held up his fists. "And Cole you're going to say hello to goodnight and sleep tight when we meet next."
This was the ninth first round KO of Grove's brief career. The loss was the third in four fight for Jensen, a Season 10 "Ultimate Fighter" alum.

It's a good thing Tito Ortiz is rich and likes to drive a $300,000 tank. The main eventer at UFC 133 got into a minor fender bender in Costa Mesa, Calif.
According to TMZ.com, Ortiz was involved in a three-car accident in his Rolls Royce. The former UFC light heavyweight champ got emotional over his smashed grill.
[Ortiz said,] "I cried a little because it's my favorite car but it will be new in no time."
Ortiz was a late fill-in at UFC 133. After Lyoto Machida asked for a bigger payday, Ortiz was seemingly the only remaining high-profile option to face Rashad Evans. Ortiz is safe and the UFC caught a huge break when he came away from this accident unscathed.

Adele's 21 is right behind at #2.

Make it a double for Beyoncé. After debuting with the lowest first-week totals of her solo career last week with 4, the "Best Thing I Never Had" singer will make it two in a row at the top next week when her latest holds on to the #1 slot thanks to sales of 115,000.
Though Bey's sales were down a bracing 63 percent (with a two-week total just shy of 426,000), that is more than enough to hold off this year's chart queen, Adele, whose five-month-old smash, 21, holds steady at #2 thanks to another 79,000 units moved. That pushes her total to date to nearly 2.6 million, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
The ladies rule a female-heavy top 10 that features just one new entry, R&B singer Lloyd's King of Hearts, which sneaks in at #10 on sales of 26,000.
The rest of the top 10: Selena Gomez & the Scene, When the Sun Goes Down (#3, 44,000), Jason Aldean, My Kinda Party (#4, 42,000), Bad Meets Evil, Hell: The Sequel (#5, 35,000), Jackie Evancho, Dream With Me (#6, 34,000), Jill Scott, Light of the Sun (#7, 32,000), Lady Gaga, Born This Way (#8, 30,000) and Big Sean, Finally Famous (#9, 27,000).
It was an otherwise quiet week for new releases, with most of the top 40 suffering double-digit drops in sales. Among those losing some significant business: Bon Iver, whose Bon Iver is down 39 percent to 24,000, "American Idol" winner Scott McCreery, whose digital EP slips nine spots in its second week as sales tanked by 65 percent, fellow "Idol" champ David Cook, whose second album, This Loud Morning, drops 19 slots to #26 in its second go-round as business fell by 74 percent, and this year's "Idol" runner-up, Lauren Alaina, whose EP shed 47 percent of last week's figures to land at #35.
It seems that few of Limp Bizkit's fans have hung around for their long-promised comeback album, Gold Cobra, as sales took a nosedive in week two. The LP falls 40 slots to #56 as sales tailed off by 72 percent (8,000). Beyoncé has to settle for second-best on the iTunes albums chart, as Adele triumphs, pushing Bey to #2, followed by Bad Meets Evil, Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More, Bon Iver, Big Sean, We the Kings' Sunshine State of Mind, Gomez, Aldean and Gaga.
You can tell it's summer on the iTunes singles chart, as party starters LMFAO take the pole position with "Party Rock Anthem," which pushes Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" to #2, followed by Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass," Pitbull's "Give Me Everything," OneRepublic's "Good Life" and Adele's monster single, "Rolling in the Deep." At #7 is Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight," and then Lil Wayne's "How to Love," Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" and Gaga's "The Edge of Glory."
Beyoncé's chart reign is likely to end next week as a raft of new titles hits shelves. They include the hyped latest from "The Voice" breakout hosting star Blake Shelton, as well as new albums from Incubus, Colbie Caillat, Chris Young and Ashton Shepherd.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Fedor Emelianenko's media workout before his bout with Dan Henderson was unlike any open workout I've attended. Normally, fighters do some light shadow boxing, hit pads with their trainers, and maybe do some light grappling. Usually, it's just enough to break a sweat and give photographers an opportunity to snap interesting pictures. It's a casual environment, and most of the fighters on Saturday's Strikeforce cards followed this script.
Until Fedor walked in. Before he even started warming up, the room took a different tone, and he didn't look like the same man who had lost to Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva. In a near-silent room, Emelianenko went through calisthenics then hit pads with an unnerving intensity. See for yourself:
Few people talked as Fedor went through his workout, and if they did, it was at a whisper. He showed off the striking and speed that made him one of the best fighters in history; the striking and speed that were absent in his last two fights.
If there was any lingering doubts about Fedor's desire to fight after his winning streak was broken, they should be completely erased.

Bellator has done a heckuva collecting some top-notch featherweight fighters. While the UFC is struggling to find some depth beyond Jose Aldo, Bellator has an open race between 5-7 fighters for top spot in its 145-pound division.
Tonight on MTV2 (9 p.m. ET/PT) we get some more answers as Pat Curran faces Ronnie Mann and Marlon Sandro battles Nazareno Malegarie in Bellator Season 5 Featherweight tournament in Rama, Canada.. The winner of the tournament will eventually get a shot at Bellator champ Joe Warren.
Sandro, riding a streak of 4-of-5 win in Japan, was the pre-tournament favorite. Sandro (18-2) got fans in a lather with his performances at Sengoku 11, 12 and 13 where he scored three straight knockouts in a combined three minutes and 20 seconds. But Curran's success at lightweight (wins over Toby Imada and Roger Huerta, plus a close loss to Eddie Alvarez) and a dominant win in the first round over Luis Palomino might make him the favorite. Before we get to see a Sandro-Curran final, they have to get by some tough hombres in Canada.
Sandro is a big favorite at minus-260 over the once-beaten Malegarie while Curran is a slight choice over Mann at minus-130.

Infiniti has just released the fourth teaser image of its upcoming seven-passenger JX crossover, and while the first, second and third images didn't reveal much, this fourth photo shows a clear view at the vehicle's front fascia. Decidedly more svelte than the larger QX, the JX takes styling cues similar to what we see on the M sedan, and that's certainly not a bad thing. There wasn't much question about whether Beyoncé's fourth solo effort, 4, would debut at the top of the Billboard 200 chart this week — it was just a matter of what the final tally would be.
Beyoncé does indeed top the chart with sales of 310,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. But that's about 172,000 less than the first-week tally for her last effort, 2006's double-disc smash, I Am ... Sasha Fierce, and marks the softest opening sales for the singer's solo albums to date (edging out her 2003 solo debut, Dangerously in Love, which moved 317,000).
Bey leads a parade of new faces in the top 10, including the debut from Kanye West protégé Big Sean, Finally Famous: The Album, which lands at #3 (87,000). Also new to the top 10: the latest from Selena Gomez & the Scene, When the Sun Goes Down (#4, 78,000); the second effort from former "American Idol" winner David Cook, This Loud Morning (#7, 46,000); and the debut EP from this year's "Idol" winner, Scotty McCreery, which hits #10 on sales of 40,000.
As for the rest of the top 10, Adele's 21 continues to defy expectations and recent music-industry logic by scooting up one spot to #2 on sales of 92,000 as her year-to-date figures pass the 2.5 million mark. After debuting at #1 last week, Jill Scott falls to #5 with The Light of the Sun, which was down 60 percent on sales of 55,000. Country singer Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party moves up four spots to #6 (48,000), "America's Got Talent" mini-opera diva Jackie Evancho falls four to #8 with Dream With Me (44,000) and the Eminem and Royce da 5'9" collabo, Hell: The Sequel, slips three spots to #9 (42,000).
While sensitive folkie Bon Iver takes a major 63 percent tumble to #11 (39,000) with his self-titled second album after a #2 debut last week, it is the steady decline of Lady Gaga's Born This Way that continues to make headlines. Even as U.K. breakout star Adele has managed to hover around the top five for most of the year and rack up the biggest figures to date for a 2011 release on the back of just one single ("Rolling in the Deep"), despite a string of singles and high-profile videos, Gaga's album has steadily faded after just six weeks.
This week marks its first outside the top 10, as Born This Way falls another four spots to #12, with sales dipping another 22 percent to 38,000 as total sales passed the 1.5 million mark.
Elsewhere on the charts, the all-star Buddy Holly tribute album, Rave on Buddy Holly, comes in at #15 (28,000), just ahead of the comeback attempt from 1990s nu-metal icons Limp Bizkit, Gold Cobra (#16, 27,000), and the self-titled album from a reunited Taking Back Sunday (#17, 27,000).
Country star Blake Shelton clearly benefited from his turn on the NBC hit reality singing program "The Voice," as his Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton rises 42 spots to #18 as sales ballooned by 182 percent to 25,000. Meanwhile, Maroon 5's latest, Hands All Over, also saw a bump thanks to singer Adam Levine's gig on "Voice," jumping 47 spots to #26 as sales went up 139 percent to 18,000. Judge Christina Aguilera saw a more modest uptick, with her 2008 greatest-hits album, Keeps Gettin' Better, re-entering the charts at #46 on sales of 12,000.
Fans also welcomed back beloved dusty folk singer Gillian Welch, whose first album in eight years, The Harrow & the Harvest, hits #20 (23,000).
Also charting: rapper Curren$y with Weekend at Burnie's (#22, 23,000), "Idol" season 10 runner-up Lauren Alaina with her debut EP (#24, 20,000) and third-place finisher Haley Reinhart with hers (#37, 14,000).
Over on the iTunes charts, Beyoncé rules the albums list, followed by Sean, Adele, Gomez, Shelton's greatest hits, Bon Iver, the resurgent Maroon 5, Cook, Eminem and Royce and Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More. In an indication of why her sales might be less than impressive, Bey doesn't have a single song on the iTunes singles chart, which is led by LMFAO's "Party Rock," which beats out Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," Pitbull's "Give Me Everything," Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" and "Voice" winner Javier Colon's "Stitch by Stitch."
Adele holds on to the #6 slot with "Rolling in the Deep," with "Voice" runner-up Dia Frampton just behind with "Inventing Shadows." She is followed by Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight," Lil Wayne's "How to Love" and Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory."
With no major releases hitting stores this week, look for Beyoncé and Adele to duke it out for the top slot in the next cycle.

Sometimes an injury can crush a card, but the UFC may catch a break this time. The promotion confirmed that Davis is out of the� main event at UFC 133 with an injury and now the search is on for replacement to face Rashad Evans.
Who fills in? There aren't many big names available. Tito Ortiz, a winner just 10 days ago at UFC 132, was offered, said no thanks and explained via Twitter:
I have a life and things to take care of. The fight game is about making the right choices of my career. If you knew what I have been going through you all would understand. Peaking for a fight is what makes a fighter unstoppable! Timing is everything in life. This is a rebuild year for me not do or die. The time will come again!
Lyoto Machida is the most obvious candidate. Machida (17-2, 9-2 UFC) last fought in late April. It took him just 65 seconds to knockout out Randy Couture at UFC 129. Now Machida and his management team have to decide if he should take a fight on 25 days notice against a guy he already destroyed.
Machida produced one of the nastier knockouts in UFC history when he took away Evans' UFC light heavyweight title back at UFC 98. Evans (15-1-1, 10-1-1 UFC) tried to counter-strike with one of the best counter-strikers in the world, and was left twisted and out cold on the floor.
Evans still switched training camps even after a scheduled fight with former training partner Jon Jones went by the wayside. He's now working mainly out of Imperial Athletics in Boca Raton, Fla.
In fight No. 1 versus Machida, he employed lots of fakes and laid back. Hopefully, we'll get to see what Mike Van Arsdale and Brazilian Top Team can bring to the table.
If Machida says no, who's the next best option? Would Evans agree to face Rich Franklin or Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, who are already scheduled to fight each other on the UFC 133 undercard? A Strikeforce fighter like Gegard Mousasi (scheduled to fight at DREAM 17 this weekend) simply isn't high profile enough to put in a main event in the UFC. Any other ideas?
