Georges St-Pierre is on the shelf for a while with a torn ACL. His boss Dana White said it'll be at least 10 months before we see the UFC welterweight champ back in the Octagon. That's a long time, and yet with an injury of this nature, it sounds a bit optimistic.
We tracked down Joe Lauzon, who also suffered a torn ACL, to ask him about the timetable for a GSP return and coming back at 100 percent both physically and mentally.
"I definitely think I rushed it. Looking back on it," Lauzon told ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas. "I was so happy. I felt like I was in good shape. I wish I had waited a little bit longer. I wish I had given it another 2-3 months."
Lauzon tore his ACL in Feb. of 2009 and was back in the cage at UFC 108 on Dec. 2, 2010.
"I definitely did feel sluggish. I didn't have a spring in my step. I couldn't really push off the way I wanted to. We tried to do a three month camp in like three weeks," said Lauzon.
He lost a slugfest against Sam Stout because he couldn't consistently get the Canadian into his realm on the ground. For that reason, Stout thinks St-Pierre should, and will take his time before returning.
"He's gonna wanna be 100 percent. He's not going to rush it. I'm sure he's going to want to get in there as soon as he can, but I'm sure his coaches, his cornermen and everyone else will make him take his time," said Lauzon.
There's also a lot more on the line for GSP vs. Lauzon. The champ comes back prematurely and isn't ready to go, that could alter his entire career.
As far as rumors that St-Pierre is frustrated to the point where he may be done with fighting, Lauzon says no way.
"We're used to waking up in pain, hobbling around, getting kicked in the legs, rolling an ankle ... you know, pulling a hamstring. Whatever it's going to be, we're pretty used to it. I'm sure this isn't going to deter him at all," said Lauzon.
It took a little while, but the explosion is back for Lauzon. Following the loss to Stout, he's won 3-of-4. His last two victories came in the first round in a combined 2:45.
